ICC Begins Advent

What do you get when you cross three purple candles, a pink candle, pine branches, and a group of ICC parishioners? An Advent wreath class! This year’s Advent wreath class took place in Mulholland Hall in the Parish Center Saturday, November 27.

Beth Martin led the class in learning about the Advent wreath and then also in making them. Each family that participated was able to make their own Advent wreath from live pine branches donated by parishioners Ron and Stephanie Byrnes, from Byrnes Nursery.

The class was an enjoyable evening with food and drink refreshments provided. It was a chance for friends and families to work together to create their very own unique Advent wreath.

The Advent wreath is very symbolic. The circular shape is never ending and represents God never ending love for us. The Evergreen branches symbolize the triumph over adversity; the rose for God’s Divine love; the star is the foretelling of the Babe; a lit candle for the Word of God; the holly for the crown of thorns and the holly berries for drops of blood that Jesus shed for us; and the wheat for the Resurrection. The color purple of the three candles is the color of royalty to welcome the advent of the King while the pink colored candle represents Guadete Sunday. Guadete Sunday is the third Sunday of Advent and the most anticipated week of Advent. The name itself comes from the Latin word Guade which translates Rejoice.

We hope that everyone has a very prayerful Advent season in preparing our hearts for Christmas.

“I pray that Advent will offer the opportunity to deepen your memory of God’s great deeds in time and will set you free to look forward with courage to the fulfillment of time by him who came and is still to come.” - Henri Nouwen (1932-1996)
